For a road trip in Madagascar, The beauty of the South is the perfect circuit. You go down from Antananarivo until Isalo crossing two national parks. With a loop to the East Coast via the Manakara Fianarantsoa legendary train to make you enjoy the white sand between the Pangalanes Canal and the Indian Ocean.

This road trip by car, train and canoe will definitely have a spirit of adventure, discovery, delight and change of scene.

DAY 1: ANTANANARIVO – ANTSIRABE

Heading southward, as to begin the famous RN7 journey, the reference for a stay in Madagascar. Discovering the rural central highlands. Stop time at Ambatolampy, a small town located in the Ankaratra massif foothills. Ambatolampy is famous for handcrafted aluminum objects and for mimosa flowering in July- August. Resuming the road to Antsirabe.

DAY 2: ANTSIRABE – FIANARANTSOA

Morning walk to admire the beautiful Merina houses, the thermal baths and other colonial buildings. Visiting local craftsmen: gemstone cutting factory, embroidery … Hitting the road to Fianarantsoa with a short stop at Ambositra, craft market of the Zafimaniry tribes.

DAY 3: FIANARANTSOA – MANAKARA

Breakfast and transfer to the Fianarantsoa train station. Train departure at 07h. Though seats are already booked, better arrive early to avoid the stressful rush. Travel by train towards Manakara at which station the driver is waiting. During this journey you will be able to enjoy the beauty of the eastern part of the Island: primary forest, waterfalls, exotic fruits … Plan a picnic lunch.

DAY 4: MANAKARA

Crossing the Pangalanes Canal by traditional dugout. Discovering the wild and lush area. Exploring villages and discovering the local population’s activities: braiding mats, building dugouts …. Lunch on a sandy lagoon where the channel and the Indian Ocean meet. Overnight at hotel.

DAY 5: MANAKARA – RANOMAFANA

Heading northwest on a hilly and often winding road. Along the way, visiting small markets and Tanala village. Opportunity to taste exotic fruits (custard apple, soursop …). Arrival by late morning and installation at your hotel. Visiting the village and the thermal spring for which the region is renowned in the afternoon.

DAY 6: RANOMAFANA

Visiting the national park home to several animals species such as the Hapalemur Aureus lemurs, the mouse lemurs, the fosa …. Discovering the reserve throughout the day or half a day.

DAY 7: RANOMAFANA – RANOHIRA

Early departure to Ambalavao, a city with one of the largest livestock markets in the South (only on Wednesday and Thursday), but also the high place of the Malagasy vineyard. Visiting the famous Antaimoro craft paper mill. Continuation to Ranohira. Crossing South gates. Lunch and check into your hotel on arrival.

DAY 8: RANOHIRA ISALO

Car transfer to Isalo’s National Park in the morning. Walk to the natural pool. Moving onward through the massif to admire panoramic views (rice fields, cliffs incised gorges).

DAY 9: RANOHIRA (ISALO) – TULEAR – ANTANANARIVO

Leaving Ranohira to reach Tulear. Discovering baobabs, Euphorbiaceae and typical southern landscapes. Arrival at the heart of the rock mass with impressive shapes. Opportunity to visit the Antsokay Arboretum. Flight to Antananarivo in the afternoon.
